PTFE tape (also called Teflon tape, plumber's tape, or thread seal tape) seals threaded pipe joints so they stop leaking. Vanguard winds ours denser than commodity tape, so it packs into the thread root, doesn't fray, and holds on the first wrap. White is for water, yellow is for gas.

Cheap plumber's tape leaks because it's wound thin and low-density, so it stretches, shreds, and beads up in the threads instead of packing into them. High-density PTFE compacts into the thread root and resists stretching, so it seals in fewer wraps and stays sealed.
Use white PTFE tape for water and general plumbing, and yellow PTFE tape for gas and propane. The color is the code: white = water, yellow = gas. Putting white water tape on a gas fitting is the most common mistake we see, so match the color to the line.

White PTFE tape is for water and general plumbing: shower heads, faucets, supply lines, ice makers, and any potable connection. It's food-safe PTFE material, wound high-density, so 2 to 3 clockwise wraps seal the joint. One roll is 460 inches at half-inch width.

Yellow PTFE tape is the correct tape for gas and propane fittings: natural gas, LP, and gas appliance connections. It's gas-rated and wound heavier-bodied than water tape, so about 4 wraps seal a gas-tight joint. One roll is 260 inches at half-inch width.
Plumber's tape is color-coded by job: white for water, yellow for gas, gray for stainless steel, and pink or red for heavy-duty high-density water lines. Match the color to the line and the right thickness comes with it.
| Color | Use it for | Density / why | Wraps |
|---|---|---|---|
| White Vanguard | Water & general plumbing: faucets, shower heads, supply lines, potable water | High-density, food-safe PTFE; packs into the thread root | 2–3, clockwise |
| Yellow Vanguard | Gas & propane: natural gas, LP, gas appliances | Gas-rated, heavier-bodied and higher-density than water tape | ~4 |
| Gray | Stainless-steel threads | Nickel-filled, dense to resist galling on stainless | 2–3 |
| Pink / Red | Heavy-duty, high-density water lines | Thicker, higher-density water tape some pros prefer | 2–3 |
Vanguard makes the white and yellow rolls. Gray and pink/red are listed so you can match any color code you run into. As a rule, thicker (higher-mil) tape seals in fewer wraps. Start a thread or two back from the end, wrap in the direction the fitting tightens, and don't over-wrap.
Wound tighter than commodity tape, so it seats into the threads and seals in fewer wraps.
The white tape is food-safe PTFE material, fine for drinking-water lines, ice makers, and potable connections.
The yellow tape is the correct, heavier-bodied tape for natural gas and propane fittings.

What's the difference between white and yellow plumber's tape?
White plumber's tape is for water and general plumbing; yellow plumber's tape is for gas and propane. White is food-safe PTFE for potable water lines. Yellow is gas-rated and wound heavier so it seals gas-tight, and it's the only one of the two you should use on a gas fitting.
Is PTFE / Teflon tape safe for drinking water?
Yes. Food-safe PTFE tape is safe to use on drinking-water lines, ice makers, and faucet connections. Vanguard's white tape is food-safe PTFE material made for potable water. Use the white tape for water, not the yellow gas tape.
How many wraps of plumber's tape do I need?
Use 2 to 3 clockwise wraps for water and about 4 for gas. Start one to two threads back from the end, wrap in the direction the fitting threads on, and keep the tape tight so it seats into the threads. Don't over-wrap, since too much tape can keep the joint from tightening fully.
What tape do I use for a gas line?
Use yellow, gas-rated PTFE tape on gas and propane fittings. White water tape isn't rated for gas, so never use it on a gas line. Yellow tape is wound heavier than water tape and seals a gas-tight joint in about 4 wraps.
Is plumber's tape the same as Teflon tape?
Yes. PTFE tape, Teflon tape, plumber's tape, and thread seal tape are all the same product. Teflon is just a brand name for PTFE, so they're interchangeable terms for the tape you wrap around pipe threads.
How much tape do I need for a shower head or faucet?
Use 2 to 3 clockwise wraps of white PTFE tape on a shower head or faucet thread. That's all it takes with high-density tape. A single 460-inch roll handles dozens of fittings, so one roll covers most household jobs.
